Morning! I def understand the concern after reading the piece (not mad at the reporter-she had limited time and I said much more after she had to leave…I failed to give full context during her time on…) Asserting our human values =/= negating the need for economic justice.

No Netflix today, friends.

Anyway, thanks for the question! I haven’t been online but some of the discussion got shared w me this morning so I wanted to respond. Be well!

So, it’s not but, but and. Because I don’t want to walk around not remembering wealth in spirit while I also fight alongside so many others to ensure economic freedom & true liberation. I’m sorry that didn’t come through the way it should have! I hope it makes more sense.

Ultimately I say no to most of the offers that come across my desk, no matter how big the brand. I’m really hoping the incredible people on the list take center stage cause that’s really my sincere hope, and that got lost in all of this (again-they came up much more later)

I simply believe that we can and just do both: wrestle our idea of what’s valuable out of the grasp of a dominant narrative *and* ensure political, material, and economic thriving (not mere surviving) for all people.

While the entire system needs replacement. Never letting systems off the hook is part of my life’s motto-and I can def see how a short piece like this could lead someone to misconstrue that that’s my principle. Again-that’s on me, and I apologize.

I fully understand that inextricably tied to all injustice is economic injustice, and some of the quiet work I’ve done, including in directing millions in direct resources to Black folks during the pandemic (and trying to find more right now) is meeting immediate material need…

None of this-and I want to be both clear & hope that my overall work shows this-negates the importance of economic justice. Black wealth is projected to be $0 by 2053-and this system isn’t designed to correct that.

Many folks on it have grown my politic & I wanted to showcase them. I try only to say yes to partnerships (the very few I do) that allow me to amplify others. I became the center of the story in this piece in a way I didn’t want to at *all.* I’m the curator. They’re the stars.

I used the list to spotlight & resource diverse (race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, etc.) ppl who are often left out of conversations of “success” & who personally define success much more meaningfully to me.

I saw that particular project as a way to challenge white dominant narratives of what’s “valuable” because that definition turns our cultural & spiritual assets into deficits. They aren’t.

In fact, in all interviews, my curator’s letter & my own posts abt the project, I said that. It’s missing from this piece & that’s on me. Context: I was invited to curate a list based on a study that found that what we get sold as success is not how we actually view it.

I’m gonna go back on my social media fast so there’s no need to try to bait me. you can argue w ya auntie. The way all of this has played out has been absolutely disgusting, and once again, the most marginalized suffer the most while everybody else cashed checks.

Asserting that content has no “real world harm” is not only easily disprovable, it’s disproved by . Especially re: Trans people of color. And it’s. On. Netflix. It was the most important film I saw last year.

And while all this has happened, another Black trans woman was found murdered, this time in Miami. Royal Poetical Starz was 26, and misgendered by local police, delaying news of her untimely death from reaching those who loved her.
