Today Brazil witnessed the achievement of a landmark in its history. Putting an end to centuries of neglect, the federal government finalized the construction of 700km+ of canals that transfer water from the São Francisco river basin throughout the semiarid Northeast region.

The end of water shortages has been an absolute priority for the govt, which has invested R$3.5 billion on canals and dams to bring water to the region. This morning, President Bolsonaro inaugurated the last 8km stretch of the canal system designed to benefit 55 million people

The 1st plan to build an irrigation system was conceived during the Imperial Government of Dom Pedro II, who considered to fund the project personally: "there will not be a Crown Jewel, but no Northeasterner will die of hunger." For political reasons, the project stalled.

The Brazilian government launches Jornada das Águas, a 5.8 Billion R$ initiative aimed at bringing drinking water to populations in situations of water insecurity in the state of Minas Gerais and the northeast by revitalizing water basins and ensuring access to clean water.

Among its decisions to recover Brazilian rivers, the federal government is also working to restore endangered fauna -  such as the Pirá, the symbolic fish of the rio São Francisco (pictured above). The species has now been seen after 5 decades of absence.
